Before entering the MMA scene, Israel Adesanya was busy enjoying success in the realm of kickboxing. As a kickboxer, he built a professional record of 75-5 and an undefeated amateur record of 32-0.
'The Last Stylebender' originally started training Muay Thai in 2008 in Whanganui under the guidance of Derek Broughton. He then moved to City kickboxing to train in the discipline with Eugene Bareman and has remained with him ever since.
In contrast to his UFC stint, he fought in more than one weight class during his tenure as a kickboxer, including middleweight and heavyweight.
Israel Adesanya made a permanent switch to MMA after his crushing defeat to Alex Pereira in a rematch in 2017. A defeat like that would probably discourage a fighter's desire to pursue a career in a second sport. However, Adesanya bounced back and conquered the sport of MMA just two years after his defeat.
During his first run in the UFC, Adesanya was considered a mainstay who might hit a wall in time. However, 'The Last Stylebender' put together a five-fight win streak before fighting for the interim UFC middleweight title at UFC 236. 'The Last Stylebender' fought with sheer determination and emerged victorious in his arsenal of fights against Kelvin Gastelum.
He then became unified champion by defeating Robert Whittaker at UFC 243 and defending the title five consecutive times. Meanwhile, Adesanya is trying to become a two-division champion at once and challenge Jan Blachowicz for the UFC light heavyweight title. However, he lost the fight via unanimous decision.
Adesanya suffered his first loss at middleweight against Alex Pereira at UFC 281 in November 2022. However, he reclaimed the belt by finishing 'Poatan' via second-round knockout in April 2023. 'The Last Stylebender' has been talked about for being the greatest middleweight of all time, a title currently held by all-time great Anderson Silva.
